Joan Miro
(Montroig, near Barcelona, 1893 - Palma de Mallorca, 1983). Joan Miro Ferra was an influential 20th century painter, sculptor and ceramist. Miro was among the first artists to develop automatic drawing as a way to undo previous established techniques in painting, and thus with Andre Masson, represented the beginning of Surrealism as an art movement. His bold reds, blues and yellows and simple shapes, make his work instantly recognizable, and his momumental, abstract sculptures are landmarks in Paris, Chicago, New York and Barcelona.
